Rodeo by Calvin Lee Martin
(In which I bought the rights to Cal's college essay and share it with his permission)
Have I sobbed to you yet that I’m about to launch my first kiddo from the nest? Yes?? It’s giving me all of the feelings - all of them. I’m scared. I’m sad. I’m thrilled for him. Mostly, I can’t wait to see what happens next.
He recently committed to his top choice, Purdue University, just a couple hours away. Which brings me to this extra-special edition of The Secret Soup. Earlier this school year, thick in the college application process, we forced Cal to write the optional essay for his Common App. There was some gnashing of teeth, but when you’re good with your words, you write the optional essay. We don’t make the rules. (Shh!)
I offered to help, which he refused just as he has refused for his entire high school career. NEVERMIND that his mom also happens to be “good with words.” Fine. Whatever. I get it. I insisted that he find someone - just one qualified person - to review the essay prior to submission. In the end, he was stuck with me. The first time I read it, I cried. It’s deeply personal and perfectly Cal. I offered minimal suggestions. (The kid is good with his words.)
Because I believe in paying writers for their work (THANK YOU for supporting my writing in this way!) I paid him a fair fee in exchange for allowing me to share his work here. I hope you enjoy it, too. (Raise your hand if it triggers your “allergies.”)
I love this kid so fiercely. His courage through adversity has inspired me since the moment we first locked eyes. He is a treasure. I will forever be the luckiest.
Without further ado…
