Hello, pals!
So, my email went out two hours ago. Most of you haven’t even gotten to it yet. I wanted to pop in quickly with a correction.
A reader (hi, Jill!) graciously emailed me with the subject line “One change” and I cringed. The trouble with sending emails out is that there’s no way to fix mistakes once they’re sent. And I always seem to let something slip through.
This one was a doozy.
In quoting Queen Angela Davis, I somehow typed her last name as Baker. I’m not sure what happened, as I had pulled up the quote online to make sure I got it exactly right.
We can chalk it up as me multi-tasking or being distracted, but it’s more than that. It was an honest mistake, yes. But I read and re-read my post and didn’t catch it. That’s a big deal and says something important about this larger conversation. I’m so sorry. The irony is not lost on me that in a post where I wanted to amplify the People of Color (PoC) I’m learning from, I mangled a powerful quote.
I corrected it on the web and I’m sending the correction here, because it matters.
As I wrote in the original email, I’m not the expert and never will be. I guess this is further proof. Thank you for the grace. I’ll keep trying to do better.
Love,
Shannan
Civil rights activist Angela Davis said, “In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist.” The difference is glaring. Not being part of the solution means being okay with contributing to the problem.
THANK YOU for ALL you do...and for your continued encouragement to "do the work".
I found out yesterday that we can access the "Just Mercy" movie for free on YouTube and Amazon...probably on other streaming services as well thanks to Warner Bros. You have to click "rent" but then it costs $0.00...well worth the time.
Thank you for your thoughts in the full post, and your humble correction. I learned a lot, and am beginning to realize the depth of my desire to turn away because I can.
