Counterweights Book Tour Announcement!
Let's hang out this Spring (along with some very special guests)
I’m thrilled to announce the official Counterweights Book Tour!
Counterweights: An Essential Practice for Holding Hope in a Heavy World is my fourth book, but this is my first book tour. Why? Because when I prioritize being with other people, I walk away more settled, a bit softer, and infinitely more hopeful. Connection and community are among my most reliable counterweights during heavy times, and these particular times feel positively leaden.
We built this tour with you in mind. I look forward to meeting each person who shows up, but I am crossing my fingers that I’ll get to meet a bunch of people from this community, which I consider the most thoughtful, open-hearted neighborhood on the internet.
Counterweights Book Tour Hometown Kick-Off Event
I am shamelessly geeked to invite you to my beloved Goshen, Indiana. Jen Hatmaker will be joining me for my hometown Counterweights kick-off on Saturday, March 28th!
I’ve known Jen for a long time1, but this was a big ask. I was elated when she said yes “duh of course obviously” six skinny minutes after I texted. I can’t wait to talk my face off with our favorite internet sister, best-selling author of Awake, and Queen of everything. She’s learned a thing or two about how to hold hope through heavy times.
Our conversation will be hosted at the gorgeous historic Goshen Theater, in partnership with our *chef’s kiss* creaky-floor indie bookstore, Fables. I’m excited for you to discover Goshen’s culture, charm, and above all, its people. (Do not sleep on Goshen’s epic food scene!) To make it easy, we created Shannan’s Guide to Goshen (linked below) which lists my local favorites.
I am equally thrilled to visit some of your states, visit a bunch of cozy bookstores, and gab with Emily! Tanorria! Kat! Kelly! WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE.

I wrote Counterweights because we’re carrying a lot. I believe in my guts that this book + the counterweights practice will make our lives better through a time that feels rather hellscapish.
Gather up your besties - your living, breathing, counterweights - and let’s have a group hug this Spring. I can’t wait to see you!
~ Shannan
Some context: I cold-emailed Jen back at the Betty Draper Rental (iykyk) when Silas was not yet potty trained, from my Yahoo account to her AOL account after reading Seven. I must have said something funny, because she emailed me back and we become actual friends. (I once described my feelings about her as, “I might love her too much. Like that bird in Dumb and Dumber.”) Fast forward to 2026 - we’re both grandmas and she’s coming to my town. I cannot deal.

I agree with the Jen Hatmaker quote. Really excited this is happening. It looks amazing.
I have never clicked on a substack post notification so fast in my LIFE - see you in Davidson!
