17 Unexpected Things I Repeat to My Kids
(and some miscellaneous updates!)
I spent this morning thinking of all of you. This is nothing new for a Friday, but today was different. The release of Counterweights is still five months away, but they’re already flying by as I spend my time planning a few IRL events!!! They’ll be open to whoever wants to join, BUT I’m giving extra consideration to how us Soupers can get some face-time. I don’t have any concrete details yet, but I can’t wait until I do! As always, you’ll be the first to know. What I hereby solemnly promise you is that anywhere I go, there will be a special little carve-out for any of you who are able to pop over. (I’m also very interested in planning events in regions that make sense for you, though we’re pretty scattered out!)
To be continued…!
This morning, while I was trying to work, our family group chat blew up with absolute nonsense. (Sidenote: Silas’s school just went to a zero phones policy this year. No phones ever - not in hallways, not even at lunch. Guess what they do now at lunch? They play board games. And a nerdy game “unofficially” called Imposter. Anyway, I’m obsessed!)
Back to the group chat.
It was distracting, but also stupidly funny. It got me feeling a little misty about how squalling babies and unruly toddlers and pre-schoolers who will TEST A MOTHER grow up to be full-grown humans, capable of agency (yikes, sometimes!) and wit. I’ve never been a “baby” person or really even a “kid” person. But I adore my people from the core of my being. What a gift, to be one of their moms in the world. What a gift, to spend my days with them. It causes me actual pain at times (always mixed with pride and joy) to watch them spread their wings. Everyone warns you, but no one can prepare you.
In honor of this nostalgia, I jotted down a list of random things I have found myself repeating over the years.
